Jay Sterner Hammond was born in Troy, New York, in 1921. He studied petroleum engineering at Penn State University (1940-1942). He came to Alaska in 1946, where he worked as a bush pilot and guide. He also attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, graduating with a degree in biological sciences in 1949. Glenn F. Massay was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania in 1931. He earned degrees in history from California State College (B.S., 1959), and West Virginia University (M.A., 1962 and Ph.D., 1970). Massay taught in West Virginia before pursuing a career in college administration and moving to Alaska in 1974.
